the beginning

Through the Lens, with the Pen, within the Spirit; the chance, fortune, danger, luck, and power of Adventure beckons.

The passage is Vision, Imagination, and Perseverance. The map is drawn within the sunset, etched amongst the stars.

Photography and travel are my lifeblood.

The Peruvian Andes Mountains and Amazon Rainforest are the veins that pump adventure into my Spirit.

Entangled amidst jungle bromeliads and giant Ceiba Trees ancient cities cry for discovery, thundering waterfalls await the morning sunrise, liberating a new vigor for the day’s exploit.

For all those interested in visiting Peru here are some ideas.

Machu Picchu, perhaps the most visited archaeological site in the New World, clamors each day with thousands of tourists. Considered a “must-see” to many but understand Machu Picchu is above all a tourist destination.

Trek the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Or, get away from the pack and take a horse trek from Cusco to places like Choquequirau.

If you wish to volunteer in the Cusco area get in touch with the Casa de Milagros, Home of Miracles.
Years ago my friend, Mama Kia, bought an old hacienda and converted the place into a home for children, the Casa de Milagros.
It was founded by Mama Kia and the Chandler Sky Foundation to heal the mind, body and spirit of many of the thousands of orphaned and abandoned children living in poverty on the streets of Cusco and surrounding towns.
Mama Kia and her family provide shelter, food, clothing, basic medical care, and education and arts programs that promote self-confidence and self-worth for children in need.

If Yoga is your interest get a bunch of friends and go to the Hanaq Pacha Retreat Center in the Sacred Valley of the Incas outside of Cusco (money supports the Casa de Milagros).

For perhaps the most happening place for archaeology, with very few tourists clamoring about, is Chachapoyas, in the north central mountains of Peru.

Located near Chachapoyas Town is the Kuelap Fortress, the largest stone ruin site in the New World, and more than 200 other ruin sites. (Personally I think Kuelap is more spectacular than Machu Picchu).
Outside of Chachapoyas Town is the newly “discovered” Gocta Waterfall, now claimed as the third tallest waterfall in the world.

If nature and wildlife is your interest then head off to the far reaches of the Amazon River. Fly into Iquitos and go UP (not down) the Amazon River at least 50-some or more miles. Here are virtually unexplored jungles, a few lodges for those wishing creature comforts, and opportunities to explore deep into the mysteries of the Amazon.

For photographers, naturalists, and birders a great Amazon destination is the Amazon Refuge wildlife conservation center on the edge of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Pacaya is the largest and least visited nature reserve in Peru. Pink Dolphins, monkey, tapir, anaconda, myriad of bird species, and even a chance for sighting a Jaguar (nocturnal and very elusive).

On a budget for your trip and into your own backpacking: Get the Rough Guide to Peru, written by anthropologist Dilwyn Jenkins.

Or if your Spirit moves you for extreme adventure, I am waiting.
